Bass Guitar for Dummies
ASIN:0764524879
Our Price: $17.49

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Outstanding Book!
Comments: This book is absolutely FANTASTIC. It takes the "mystery" out of the awkward start up period ("How do I hold the bass?" How do I tune this darn thing?") and then quickly digs in to keep the reader interested.

Think you are too "good" for this book??? Don't be fooled by the title! This book is quite useful for players (like myself) who've been around the muscial block for a while. Patrick is a very gifted instructor and his talent and love for the instrument, music, and teaching shines thru on every page. Even if you are an advanced player, the sections on musical styles, advanced scales/arpeggios, and creating grooves can always help. Patrick teaches you valuable skills that you need to survive on the job and get MORE WORK. (Plus the "Bassists/Drummers to Know" section is a MUST read!)

It is obvious that Patrick knows his stuff cold. He is a bountiful resource for Bass Guitar instruction and his writing style and quick wit keeps you interested.

I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Building Electric Guitars: How to Make Solid-Body, Hollow-Body and Semi-Acoustic Electric Guitars and Bass Guitars
ASIN:3901314075
Our Price: $27.50

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: Good book, bad publisher
Comments: Martin Koch has compiled a lot of good information in this book. I haven't seen this much information about electric guitars in any one book. If you are only going to buy one book on electric guitars (why would you, really) this is a good one. He goes into winding pickups, various wiring ideas, and several building techniques. The problem (really the only one) is that the illustrations, while numerous, are quite small and poorly reproduced. You can see what each one is but there were obvious registration and focus problems. It looks like they used digital images of low resolution. The publisher should have taken more care. That said it's not enough to make me regret the purchase. This is a valuable addition to my library.
The Art of Contemporary Travis Picking: How to Play the Alternating Bass Fingerpicking Style (Bk & CD)
ASIN:0936799005
Our Price: $15.96

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: A truly ...starter book for finger picking
Comments: Greatest book ever if you want to learn fingerstyle. I'm about three quarters of the way through now, and can't believe I'm playing some of this stuff. You have to know some basic chords (open A, D, G, etc.) to get going, and towards the end of the book some Barre chords come into play, but it's nothing too difficult. I just wish I had found this book years ago.
101 Bass Tips : Stuff All the Pros Know and Use
ASIN:0634017470
Our Price: $14.95

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: good book on electric bass technique and tricks
Comments: Upon first glance at this book, it feels like its hardly worth buying. But after I had looked through it, I decided to get it. It has 101 rather interesting tips for the eletric bass player, no matter how many strings your bass has or if it is fretless. It has everything from a string boiling recipe to revive old strngs to soloing essentials. There is a section on how to communicate with the drummer so the drummer isn't walking on eggshells, as the author put it. There is a section on difficult chords and getting along with a band. This book might not look like much, but I highly recommend it. I'm still trying to tame my instrument cables according to some guidelines in this book.
Standing in the Shadows of Motown : The Life and Music of Legendary Bassist James Jamerson
ASIN:0881888826
Our Price: $24.50

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: James Jamerson, Stone Alone
Comments: In contrast to the bass players warning you away from not reading this book, those who have seen the movie of the same name may not be surprised enough by how different this book (dedicated to James Jamerson alone) is. This is because the movie is frankly a celebration of a Motown sound which is no longer a live cultural influence, and many may not properly understand the equivocality of this statement on account of Norman Whitfield's other omisssions -- Jamerson was very much a figure of Detroit Motown, but like the "psychedelic soul" which immediately preceded the *auteur* LA era he was *meant* to be felt and not heard.

Due to his increasing cultural stature, very little attention is paid here and elsewhere to the fact that the famous AM-friendly Motown mastering was intended almost explicitly to reduce Jamerson's presence in the mix, to the point that I suspect the first revelation for quite a few concerning the downside of the Sixties was the discovery that some people *really* knew how to play. The praise for "Igor" is not "subaltern" hype: Jamerson's arpeggios meet the formal standards for virtuosity set by classical musicians, and the further standard of not interfering with Motown's positioning in the "social field" as the "Sound of Young America" in no ambiguous sense. Here we can see how Jamerson's stature was reduced during his lifetime *even* as the cultural influence of his midsixties highpoints increased.

Such that we might do well to wonder not only "whither Berry Gordy?" but also whether Jamerson's descent into madness and death reflected the de-privileging of a certain standard of craftsmanship in American culture (one might also consider Rick James' sobriquet for the late Marvin Gaye, "Uncle Marvin"). On this score, the sociologist Niklas Luhmann once said that his position on long-term societal changes was that he was not asked: and although there is a refreshing amount of realism in such positions, that is rather explicitly and interestingly not the stance of this book -- those curious about "cultural memory in the present" would also do well to consider it.

The Art of Solo Fingerpicking : How to Play Alternating-Bass Fingerstyle Guitar Solos (book and CD)
ASIN:093679903X
Our Price: $15.96

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: Excellent examples and practical advise
Comments: I thought this book/CD combination was a great teacher, and just about right for my playing ability (intermediate). I found about 50% of the material to be allready familiar and 50% new. And there were a couple of places that I actually disagreed with his fingering choices (nobody plays the guitar the same way, so we should only adopt the teacher/author content that makes us better individual players - not "correct" players). But more importantly, this book forced me to face up to some bad playing habits I've used for 20+ years. I had to take a couple of months worth of steps backward to change in one case, but I expect substantial benefits in the long run. This is a very good teaching book, and I recommend it to everybody above complete beginner. Those players who know at least 30 chords can tackle this book, because most of the songs are only difficult to play at concert pace.

I gave the book 4 stars, but 4 1/2 would have been more accurate. My only complaint is that the book is somewhat thin on content: explanations, photos and exercises. Mark Hanson also says little about the underlying musicology in the examples (modes, triads, key signatures, time etc.). There is a lot of white space on some pages, while p 26 is used for a photo of a church (?). I kind of get the feeling that the author wants to sell as many books as possible, and holds back from including everything we need. There are several references to his other books.

But to finish on a positive note, the extensive artist/song list in "Appendix C - People to Hear" is excellent. You can be sure that some of your favorites are included, and that some suggestions will be new to you.

Ultimate Beginning Series Bass Basics Steps One and Two Combined (The Ultimate Beginner Series)
ASIN:1576234266
Our Price: $9.95

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: The Best!
Comments: Tried my hand at guitar by using different books, but that didn't go so well, and so when I decided that I wanted to learn bass I was sceptical about buying one of these books to learn from instead of lessons, however it was the best thing I ever did!!!! From all I understand the guy has helped create this works at the Guitar Institute in CA. Either way, this is a GREAT buy!
Serious Electric Bass: The Bass Player's Complete Guide to Scales & Chords (Contemporary Bass Series)
ASIN:1576238830
Our Price: $19.96

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: Another powerful tool - truly for SERIOUS bass players.
Comments: This book is packed with endless info on the subject - scales and chords. By practicing the excercises in it, one can begin developing a good ear and understand why basslines of some songs are played the way they are.

In fact, this book is teaching me that there are many contemporary songs that are done in modes of common scales. I didn't even know such a thing existed!

Another thing is that you get a great appreciation for the neck and the note values along it by using this book in practice.

You would have to be able to sight-read for this book though, since tab is not used.

The first few sections - particularly the part on setting up and adjusting your bass - are invaluable, as they offer clear instructions that demystify the fear of 'DIY' on your bass.

The only problem I had was that one of the pages (I think it was p.55) was double-printed, so the page before it was not there. Otherwise, this book is an important investment for players who want to understand the relationships between chords and to develop their ear.

Funkifying the Clave: Afro-Cuban Grooves for Bass and Drums
ASIN:0769220207
Our Price: $29.95

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: WOW!
Comments: Combining traditional Latin claves with a funk backbeat. I bought this book / cd combo to improve my bass playing and drumming. (Yep! I play both.) I enjoy Latin / rock type music and wanted to become more familiar with the various styles and rhythms of this music. This book is awesome! It is also not fot the beginner or the timid unless you are dead serious about your playing. This will not only improve your playing, but your reading as well. The CD's start with a group of songs performed by the band. Then they break into LOTS of examples of ALL different styles of Latin music. Once you think you have it all mastered, the songs you heard at the beginning of the cd are there without drums / bass depending on which cd you want to play along with. Yes there are 2 cd's. One for drums, one for bass. By the way, all the songs on the cd have studio grade charts in the back of the book for you to follow. If this book doesn't keep you busy for a long time, you must already be a seasoned studio professional. Even if you are, there's probably something in here for you. ENJOY!
The Encyclopedia of Double Bass Drumming
ASIN:0634014676
Our Price: $12.95

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Finally
Comments: I've worked through just about every other double bass drum book out there and, although the exercises were interesting from a coordination/conditioning standpoint, they did not prepare me to actually play double bass drum patterns in a musical context. I was about to write my own book with exercises I'd developed but then found this book. I thank the authors for saving me the trouble! If you're interested in building double bass drum chops and only want to buy one book...this is it.

Hal Leonard Electric Bass Method - Second Edition : Books 1, 2 and 3 Bound Together in One Easy-to-Use Volume!
ASIN:0793563836
Our Price: $17.47

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Great Beginner Book
Comments: I got this for my 11 year old son. He has been playing acoustic and electric for about a year using the Hal Leonard Guitar Method Books 1-3 which he enjoyed. Now he wants to learn bass too, so naturally we looked at the Bass Method book. This book is great for a beginner. It starts out simple with lots of good exercises for each string and gradually gets more complicated.

We use Hal Leonard for a basic foundation. He works with his teacher and they combine this book with whatever other music he wants to play such as "Learn to Play Bass with Metallica" or his favorite CD's. I looked at other bass books but felt that this was the best for beginners. Also, do yourself a favor and get a metronome if you want to play bass!

The Bass Player Book: Equipment, Technique, Styles, and Artists
ASIN:0879305738
Our Price: $16.07

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: Great Book For The Novice Or Intermediate Bassist
Comments: This book will be a wonderful tool for the bassist who is just beginning to learn his/her instrument or the more experienced player who would like to explore their options. The theoretical and instructional section is as comprehensive as is possible for those without the benefit of an instructor as well as being easy to understand. The section covering equipment will serve well as a guide to those of us with just enough information to make ourselves look very foolish. The section on notable bassists and the recommended listening list stands as a veritable "who's who" of my own personal heros. (Where's Patitucci?!) I will highly recommend this book.
Acoustic Stories: Playing Bass with Peter, Paul & Mary, Jerry Garcia, and Bill Monroe, and Eighteen Other Unamplified Tales
ASIN:192857811X
Our Price: $15.95

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: His stories are like picturesque mountain scenery
Comments: One of the first photos in "Acoustic Stories" shows author Bill Amatneek playing upright bass with Peter, Paul and Mary in 1979. At the end of the book, a photo shows the author with the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band in 2003. Between these pictures are over 20 stories and 33 other photos that provide extraordinary recollections from this musician's years of professional experience. Amatneek refers to these stories as unamplified tales, largely because of his love of acoustic music. Moreover, he certainly needs no additional reinforcement, expansion or exaggeration of them to make his charming points. In fact, each story reads quickly, and they come across more as entertaining anecdotes that are both interesting and humorous. For the most part, they are based on real occurrences although the author's preface indicates that some are "told from their facts but to their hearts." Like picturesque mountain scenery, each story is suitable for framing. The author writes with a vivid freshness and vigor that capture his unique experiences.

Amatneek grew up in New York's Greenwich Village in the 1940s, and his connections eventually led to him becoming a "string-bass poppin', banjo-pickin' Philadelphia folkie." His short vignettes from the 1960s through the 1990s include tales about meeting Bob Dylan, being "used" as a prop by Mary Travers, interviewing Aretha Franklin, having Dionne Warwick sing "Happy Birthday" to him on his 21st birthday, and being inspired by Mimi Farina to make the world a better place. Throughout the book, the author intersperses a few song lyrics amidst the narrative.

Acoustic musicians, especially in the folk genre, typically include stories into their presentation. Most are based on personal experience and relate thoughtful and honest portrayals of life on the road and the people they meet along the way. Many of Amatneek's yarns revolve around well-known music personalities. In one situation, he might be auditioning tortoiseshell picks with Tony Rice in Paris. In another, he and the Rowan Brothers might be picking with Bill Monroe at the Wintergrass Festival in Tacoma, Wa. A couple of my favorites are about a panel discussion of the meaning of Monroe's song lyrics in "Little Girl and the Dreadful Snake." Other favorites are his description of the 3-ring circus of Beach Blanket Babylon, and the 50th anniversary of D-Day in 1994 in Ranville, France.

The emotional impacts of death creep into the stories. The author becomes introspective when talking about the passing of Mimi Farina, Kate Wolf, Jerry Garcia, Steve Gorn's father, Steve Silver, Al "Jazzbeaux" Collins, and the New Orleans horn player Buddy Bolden. Amatneek claims to be "basically shy," but this book shows, in writing, his more social and extrovert side. His "Acoustic Stories' are affectionately told, and anyone who can appreciate a few slices of music-related folklore will enjoy this book. Not only will you get to know the reserved bassist, author and storyteller better, but you'll get a taste of what it's been like for Bill Amatneek to cross paths and play with many luminaries in the music business. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

The Jazz Bass Book: Technique and Tradition
ASIN:0879307161
Our Price: $17.47

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: An entertaining and instructive collection
Comments: This book is essentially an annotated and expanded collection of columns originally published in Bass Player magazine. As such, it's more of a disconnected set of essays than a narrative; the discussion of significant bass players is somewhat spotty, and doesn't go into great detail on their music and style in the way that (for example" Todd Coolman's "The Bass Tradition" does. But it's still both entertaining and educational. The chapters, being mostly self-contained, can be read at random as the reader's interest dictates.

The first section of the book is primarily short snapshots of significant bassists, each being composed of a short biography accompanied by brief musical examples. The latter section- almost an appendix- consists of longer examples of styles and techniques. It's not really a method book, but it does offer some insight into styles and harmonic and rhythmic concepts for the beginning or intermediate jazz bassists. The accompanying CD helps illustrate the musical examples for those whose reading and playing technique are at a more basic stage.

All in all, a very entertaining and useful book for jazz bassists of all abilities, and an excellent choice for bedside reading.

Summary: Leo changes the face of music.
Comments: The Bass Book was very informative as to the process at which the bass guitar came to fruition and it's evolution. I couldn't put it down. Any one who plays the bass or is thinking of playing will enjoy reading this book. It also gave me a sense of pride that I belong to a sort of "brotherhood" of bass guitarists. Although it's history is not that old, it certainly made a great impact on modern music. I highly recommend this book to bass enthuiasts as well as anyone who likes music in general.

Summary: Boy, I wish I found this sooner!
Comments: I simply can't sing enough praise for Ed's book. I've been playing djembe and congas for a couple years, and I've always wanted a comprehensive book that covered the history, rhythms, and instruments. Finally I have one. This book describes the background in terms of history and culture that birthed Afro-Cuban music, then takes a structured approach through all the instruments.

The breadth of coverage on the instruments is fantastic. Not only are there the basic rhythms, but with Ed's approach, you see how they all fit together. It even has a whole section on the non-percussion parts of the rhythm section (piano, bass, etc.) and how the songs of various styles are structured. I've never found this kind of information elsewhere. For people who don't have a background in these musical styles (like me), this is wonderful. Then there's a whole section on adapting these styles to drum kit.

The audio examples are the best I've heard in any book/CD combo I own, by far. They are far more comprehensive than any other, and they support what you're learning in the text. The synergy between text and audio makes this a gold mine.

While this book is more expensive than most music books, it has several times the value of any other book I've seen. I so much wish I had this from day one. Even getting it now, it's filling in the (many) gaps in my learning, and will surely be the most essential book in my collection for a good long while.

Summary: The bassist's 'Bathroom Reader'
Comments: For the casual reader, the serious bookworm, and everybody in between - this should appeal to everyone who is interested or intruiged by the evolution of music with the Electric Bass. It all started here, and rock music as we know it would never be the same without the instrument pioneered 50 years ago by Leo Fender.

This book spans, in detail, the life (and death) of Fender basses... from the prominent Precision Bass, to the unique Jazz Bass, and even the concept 1970's 5-string short-scale bass which would never be seen again in the market. It will show you photographs of the Fender team in action... and much more.

In the back of the book, you will find descriptive explainations of the changes the basses underwent in the 50 years of existance... right down to the Tuning Keys, Bridges, and Decals.

This book is a treasure to me - if I ever lost it, I would buy another one without hesitation.

Comments: Being a musician already, I like this book because it doesn't move to slow through the beginning. It gives a few pages of introduction to music, but it doesn't overkill. The progression through the material is excellent as well. The pace is good, and explanations helps to make these exercises worthwhile.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to expand on their prior bass knowledge, and get into some jazz and blues. I have taken big leaps in my playing, and I haven't had it for very long.

Ray Brown's Bass Method: Essential Scales, Patterns, and Exercises
ASIN:0793594561

Customer's Rating: 3
Summary: Things you need to know to have Ray's TECHNICAL ABILITY
Comments: If you want to have Ray's TECHNICAL ABILITY (not his musical concepts), this book surely have the content of what you need to know to be one. But if you're a beginner (which at this time needs full guidance in almost everything), then maybe this book isn't yet for you (except, if someone more experienced could help you out). Almost from the beginning we were forced to find out fingerings on your own (and this is good, if you already have enough experience with the instrument). So, if you don't have enough experience, you need another book that gives you full guidance in every material taught, for example: Lew Berryman's 'Intonation Plus'.
Another problem - there's some mistakes in the books. Either some wrongly written notes, and some wrongly written content. P 29 have exactly the same content with p 31, but the titles were different. These things could led to confusion.

Though the book goes with the video (of the same name) so it's good to get both. Also, on the cd is a jam session with jaco and an interview. All in all it's a great value and no jaco collection is complete without it.

Summary: Nice pictures - but not enough to build
Comments: I just purchased this book based on reviews read on Amazon. I would not at all reccomend this book. The book does have a nice layout and a lot of great pictures..... but thats it - a pretty book it is but the drawings and technical illistrations you need to build it are not included.... IMPORTANT things like neck thickness, neck thickness at the neck joint, any many other important things are not covered at all. A dimentioned neck end, and neck pocket detail are not even included. A body layout is shown and again not dimentioned. The only dimentions that are given are for a template to route the pickup and bridge holes... The most important topics are barely covered like setting the neck and bolting it on, alignment etc.....
Nice - but I would not tell anyone to buy this book,

To VERY briefly summarize the material:
A Chick From Corea is about triplets and 'country and western' sound. Victor plays the melody, while Steve plays chords.

Bangkok Blues finds Steve playing etheral false-haromonics over Victor's anchoring funky blues, then Victor plays hammer-ons over Steve's fretless chording.

Stan The Man: Dedicated to Stanley Clarke. Victor plays a tenor bass- ADGC - against Steve's chords, both take solos at the same time. The chord progresson starts gently so you can hear it, then they crank it up.

Victor's Jam: A funk workout from Victor and drummer Greg Bissonette.A range of techniques is used to keep with the drummer

Thumb Start My Harley: With Steve's fretless played through wicked distortion (like Pink Floyd's "One Of These Days") over Victors pumping foundation, which turns into competing, over-the-top triplet solos. Jack Bissonette's emphatic drumming morphs into a VERY complex solo, in correct time. As Steve says in the lesson intro, "If you think you have good time, pat your foot all the way through that at the tempo of the song and you
should come out right. Until you do, keep trying!" Victor will later explain how he does the very funky "open-hammer-pluck".

Emereld Forest: Victor arpegiates chords through sweet reverb while Steve's fretless sings a sitar-ish melody.

Moonridge: Steve's solo, a study for the right hand (6 string fretless) keeping the D string going, with chords and harmonics. If you had thought there were any limitations to electric bass this should put those fears to rest.

Donna Lee: Victor plays the scales using thumb and index finger, using thumb-down, thumb-up, index finger triplets. The scales are sewn together in the familiar tune, while Steve pays the chords that Charlie Parker copped from "Indiana" to support it. DENSE, with some call and response at the end. (Another take on the same classic tune appears as "Madonna Lee"
on the "Cookbook" cd.

Summary: Latin grooves for bass guitar
Comments: I've seen this book in the local book shop. I compared it with at least two similar books: Alfred Mastertracks: Latin by Steve Hougton and Tom Warrington and the `Salsa guidebook for piano & ensemble' by Rebecca Mauleo'n. The latter book is a general book, not just for bass guitar.

As a beginner in Latin grooves I first want to learn the grooves and then learn some background information about Latin music. So the book I am looking for should contain some background information but mainly grooves.

This book seems very complete in the amount of grooves and styles it contains. Also it still contains some background information about Latin music. The book by Rebecca Mauleo'n does not seem to contain that many grooves but offers much more background information. The book by Steve Houghton contains mainly grooves but much fewer grooves than this book contains.

Bass Secrets : Where Today's Bass Stylists Get to the Bottom Line

Summary: Solid Inspiration
Comments: The learning of any great craft requires instruction from a master. In this case, 4 masters of the bass sit down and give you bite-sized lessons. My one gripe is that it is fairly short-Guitar magazine should have included some more columns-but each column is worth learning from.
The most important note I can make is that Bass Secrets will NOT-trust me here-be any replacement for comprehensive instruction. Some of its lessons are foundational, like the modal learning exercises, but most introduce new playing concepts. What this book can be is a great rut-breaker and source of inspiration; its tips can help you view an old line or technique in a different light. If you treat the book as the new-idea generator which it was intended to be, I guarantee that this book will stretch you in some, if not many, ways...unless you have been fortunate enough to have personally studied under Billy, Stu, Randy, and Tony!

Summary: Great funk-book for bass
Comments: When I bought "Funk Bass" I thought it was gonna be just another book with a couple of cool licks and a couple of good exercises and another badly recorded cd, but I was pleasantly surprised.

First of all, I recognised myself completely in the introduction where Mr. Liebman describes bad exercise-habits, so I was immediately motivated to do every exercise in this book.

Also, the way this book is written, it's almost like there's actually someone sitting next to you and encouraging you to continue to practice. The exercises are really helpful and the licks in chapter 5 and 6 really groove. The cd is good and because of the way it's recorded you can mute the bass-guitar or the drums by turning the balance completely to the left or the right speaker. There's also a lot of useful information about effects and a great discography.

I think that I'm a much better bass-player after practicing with this book for a couple of months. So if you want to be a better (funk-)bassplayer: buy this book and follow the instructions step by step.

Summary: Incredible book
Comments: If you are just getting into Jamaican music or know somebody who is you have to purchase this book. It will teach you how to play ska, rocksteady, dub and reggae. It's great for either novices or experts. I wish I had this way back when I first started playing The Police. It comes with a CD and you can jam along or create your own bass lines after you have learned the basic idea. Seeing both the notation and the tab written out helps in learning how these bass lines are born and how they work with each style.

Summary: Boy, was I wrong!
Comments: I spent time with the Bass EncycloMedia and am very impressed!
As a professional bass player for over 30 years, I didn't think I had much to learn from the Bass EncycloMedia. Boy, was I wrong! This book is filled with practical and highly musical techniques and information that will benefit bass players who have passed beyond the "beginner" stage. The book is written the way most bass players think.....visually instead of in notation. This is a great addition to the library of bass players of any style and any ability level.
