Art of Cello Playing ASIN:0874870712 Our Price: $21.56
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Easily Over-reated and Under-rated Comments: This book culminates a top quality effort in pedagoy in cello technique. It is intended for beginners in the cello, but probably should be on every amateur cellist's book shelf as a valuable resource guide. There is probably a good three years worth of material here. I'll let you know when I finish it!This effort to present the art of playing the cello in a systematic way--a "cello method", however, both enhances and detracts from the lasting usefulness of this book. If you follow through this book step-by-step, and gain some proficiency in a topic prior to moving on to the next topic, you will eventually learn the cello. But the systematic presentation makes this book difficult to use in diagnosing difficulties in technique that are the result of improper form, or motion. The material is there, but sometimes it takes a good while to find the exact presentation you are looking for. But still, the author's insight into the difficulties students tend to accumulate are well worth the effort required to track it down. Who knows, maybe you will learn something else while you are perusing the book. But I find it difficult to come up with an approach that would accomadate this usage, so I do not criticise this. On the contrary, I think more non-beginning amateurs should get this book for this purpose! The effort is worthwhile. The only criticism of this book that I have is that it does use pictures to show posture, and so on. I am sure that in the early editions of this book, the pictures were wonderfully clear and illustrate the subtleties of form and posture precicely. But the current printing quality leaves a lot to be desired, sadly. It would be well worth someone's time to replace the pictures with line drawings, which do not lose content as the printing quality deteriorates. And a fingerboard chart would really be helpful. This book is a definite must!

Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: the making of a cello Comments: I bought this book to give to a friend for Christmas. He had just dusted off his Cello after 20+ years and needed some refresher info. Unfortunately, this was not the book for him. This is a book of esays about the history of and how to make a cello. It gives great detail in that aspect. There isn't really any included music or actual methods.

Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: The Suzuki method is a wonderful way to learn an instrument. Comments: I started learning the cello with Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star Variations in book one of the Suzuki Cello School. Ever since I first learned those notes, the Suzuki Cello Method has challenged and amazed me. I would whole-heartedly recommend the Suzuki method to anyone who wants to learn to play an instrument while playing recognizable songs.

Cello Technique: Principles and Forms of Movement ASIN:0253210054 Our Price: $22.95
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Very helpful for beginners Comments: I'm a complete beginner on the 'cello. This book answered a lot of my questions about the mysteries of basic bow movement, finger placement, etc. Most importantly, it has a very substantial discussion of the physical mechanics of one's body when playing. Obviously, reading is no substitute for the experience of actual playing, but the book provides a very solid conceptual framework for understanding what is going on. I have a much better understanding of why certain movements produce good sound and others don't. The book doesn't quite get the full five-star rating because the language (from the German author in translation) is sometimes a little stilted for modern American readers. With only a second reading, though, it is much more clear. Highly recommended.

Cello (Yehudi Menuhin Music Guides) ASIN:1871082382 Our Price: $26.95
Customer's Rating: 2 Summary: rambling and vague Comments: William Pleeth did not write this book. He talked, in an abstract, discursive manner, around various subjects having remotely or less remotely to do with the cello, and someone transcribed some of his conversation. One of the chapters was written entirely by the transcriber (and not particularly well) with no contribution from William Pleeth. You may find this book "inspirational", if you like vague speech-making, but you are unlikely to find it of practical value. Mr. Pleeth never deigns to consider the nitty-gritty; he never rolls up his sleeves and sets to work.

The Countess of Stanlein Restored: A History of the Countess of Stanlein Ex Paganini Stradivarius Cello of 1707 ASIN:1859847617 Our Price: $13.30
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: close, but no cigar Comments: It is easy to be excited by the promise of this little book. Its austere but stylish cover displays an old, rare, beautiful instrument. The instrument was created by a sublime craftsman. In recent years it has been played by another, and now it has been restored by a third. The cello has an intriguing name and the cover notes suggest a history to match. Alas, seduced readers will be left unfulfilled. The story is simpler than the promised romance. Ardent admiration is obvious in descriptions of the knowledge and skill of the craftsmen, but little of any depth is revealed. Even the illustrations disappoint. It's a beautiful package and will look well on any shelf. However what might, with more control, have been a delightful article in Vanity Fair is, instead, bloated, swollen and grandiose.

Great Romantic Cello Concertos in Full Score ASIN:0486245845 Our Price: $10.47
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Great Concertos For The Cello Comments: Three great cello concertos are included in this edition, with perhaps the Dvorak concerto being the best ever written for the instrument. Dover's edition is put together well. Clear printing, score lays flat, and once again, how can you beat the price? Recommended for anyone that loves these concertos and wants to learn more about them.

Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: Cello is an instrument of many words... Comments: Dont take my rating all too seriously. I dont have a good eye for rating things on a scale (as my statistics teacher tells me) but i know a good piece when i smell one... or is it when i hear one? i guess will never know, but all i have to say is that tchaikovsky wrote one of the greatest pieces of cello music out there, next to haydn, bach, beethoven, etc. variations on a roccoco theme is a wonderful piece of music for the aspiring cellist, seeing that i am one and know many more. =)
