Art of Clarinet Playing ASIN:0874870232 Our Price: $12.95
Customer's Rating: 2 Summary: Content quality marred by poor print quality Comments: Light print on all pages pages fades into almost unreadably light in a few pages. The print quality of this booklet detracts from the content of this book. If you want some good information about clarinets, but don't mind straining your eyes with an inferior quality publication, this would be for you.

The Clarinet Polka: A Novel ASIN:0312308892 Our Price: $17.47
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: A Couple Good Stories in One Comments: Maillard does a good job combining the story of the servicemen re-assimilating post-Vietnam with the story of the Nazis' treatment of Catholic Poles in WWII. His book is also a fascinating portrait of blue-collar America, specifically the Polish-American communities in the Midwest. It made me want to look for recordings of the polkas the all-girl polka band plays.

Clarinet (Yehudi Menuhin Music Guides) ASIN:1871082129 Our Price: $19.95
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: A benchmark book on clarinet Comments: I first read this book when I was about 12 years old (just a few years after it was first published). Call me precocious, but I was able to follow it then, as a beginning clarinetist, even though some of the technical matters described were beyond my abilities at the time. One need only pick up books by Wm. Stubbins or O. Lee Gibson (both brilliant clarinetists and teachers, by the way) to appreciate how conversationally and easily Mr. Brymer explained highly technical matters in this book. Now, as an experienced clarinetist and private instructor, I find myself recalling concepts that Mr. Brymer taught in this book every time I teach lessons (or pick up the horn). I feel this book was a lot of what transformed my interest in the clarinet from "something to get me out of P.E" to something that I sought to excel in.

Mozart : Clarinet Concerto (Cambridge Music Handbooks) ASIN:0521479290 Our Price: $17.86
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Advanced Music Appreciation, but worth the effort Comments: Mozart's K. 622 is certainly one of his greatest concerti. If you have listened to this work several times, or simply want a better understanding, Lawson's book is ideal. Although I am not a clarinetist, this book has profoundly shaped my listening and appreciation of this masterpiece.True to this Cambridge series, the concerto is put into its historical context. Did you know that the clarinet used in the late 1700s was toned differently than today's? Did you know there is no cadenza? The chapter on design and structure is arguably the best set of program notes on the piece. The descriptions are nearly bar-by-bar, so you will need to have a score handy. For example, the development section of the first movement (Allegro) changes tonality from E major to F# minor to D major to B minor to F# minor in about 20 bars. Where the book does justice is to show parrallels both within movements as well as between movements. Indeed, there are even references to other Mozart works, especially to the esteeemd Clarinet Quintet and even clarinet portrayls in Don Giovanni and Cosi Fan Tutte. Ideally, this book would have been more accessible through an interactive CD-ROM with links to those themes. This then is the reason to get the book--the rich context, both musically and historically, in which this piece is put. In other words, a careful reading of Chapter 6, with a recording and the score, and my finger on the pause button, have given me increased insight into not only this piece, but several other Mozart conerti and arias. Please note that the book is scholarly and I have onl described a single chapter. For most other books, I would not consider the purchase of a book for a single chapter a good value. Hoewver, bearing in mind that Mozart's Clarinet Conerto is THE definitive clarinet concerto and a piece no Mozart lover should be without, it is a worthwhile investment. To the first time listener, the last movement, with its rapid changes in tessitura, rich textures, and addictive melodies will offer the listener bubbling satisfaction. By reading the book, it will offer increased insight into this masterpeice of this genius.

Concerto for the Clarinet ASIN:0825623057 Our Price: $11.95
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: moderately disappointing Comments: "The Grove Dictionary of Jazz" says this piece, which is not, in fact, a concerto, rather a big band arrangement (with strings) featuring clarinet, its title inspired possibly by Ellington's "Concerto for Cootie", shows, more than any other, the range of Artie Shaw's clarinet style, which is not to say it is his best recording. It is featured toward the end of the movie "Second Chorus", starring Fred Astaire, Burgess Meredith, Paulette Goddard, and Artie Shaw (playing himself). It is available on certain Artie Shaw compilation discs. This "book", however, is not, in fact, a score, but an abridged clarinet solo with simplified piano accompaniment and "orchestral" cues. The trumpet and piano solos are missing, but so far as I can tell the clarinet transcription (in concert key in the piano part, transposed in the clarinet part) is accurate. The pages are flimsy, and there is no cardboard cover, just a title sheet of the same flimsy paper. My copy arrived crimped at the corner.

Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Excellent first clarinet book Comments: This is a good beginning book to learn the notes of the clarinet and has some basic exercises. But very soon, you will want to buy a book that has more complete exercises like scales, arpeggios and other patterns. I recommend the book to get started though.

Best Of The Beatles Clarinet ASIN:0793521432 Our Price: $9.95
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: Lots of songs! A few problems though... Comments: First of all, except for "Birthday" a maybe a few others, the parts for alto sax are all the vocal leads in songs, ONLY. The songs are fairly easy to play, and aren't written exactly the way it is played on the cds (some different repeats or note lengths, or in some songs like "Sgt. Pepper" you get harmonies instead of the melody.) One of my biggest problems is that many of the songs (all?) are not in the same key as the real ones. Playing along with the cd unfortunately is impossible unless you transpose the music to a different key. However, this book is cheap and comes with many, many songs! ***In addition to this, there is a very good Beatles song book called Lennon & McCartney solos for the alto sax. The parts are well written and have a wider difficulty range than this one. It comes with a play-along cd which will supply the rythym section for you and will play your part on a piano (which you can turn off.) It only has about 10 songs (Yesterday, Can't Buy Me Love, Lady Madonna {my fav song to play and the hardest piece you'll find in either book}, and Maxwell's Silver Hammer to name a few,) but is well worth it.

Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Excellent! Comments: Very interesting edition. Noteheads are large and well readable. The preface is very interesting, and lists some passages found in Brahms' autographs that were crossed out and rewritten (e.g. the beginning of the Clarinet Quintet). Hans Gal (the editor) made a great work in preparing this edition!

Benny Goodman for B Flat Clarinet ASIN:0825642019 Our Price: $15.95
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Benny Goodman, the King of Swing Comments: Well, first off I didn't order this online. I bought it at a store. And it was just what I was looking for. Any clarinet player who is interested in jazz should definitely check this out. Not only does this book include 30 solos played by Benny Goodman, it also gives tips and pointers on how to play with "swing" and other techniques. This book will definitely help you, but it may also hurt you if you're not willing to be patient and take it slow at first. If you don't you'll never hit those really high 32nd triplets.

Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets: Selected Themes from the Motion Picture: Clarinet ASIN:0757910874 Our Price: $9.95
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Wow!!! Not for beginners!! Comments: I have been playing violin for quite a while and just bought this book. There is a version that comes with a cd which is very helpful. Their are note in 3rd, 4th and 5th position but they are transposed down for those who can't play them. The most recognizable themes are there (harry's wonderful world and hedwig's theme) and a few that are hard to recongnize, such as dobby's theme (this is why the cd is so good). Since their are not that many copies on amazon.com, be sure to check out your local music store. Mine had a book for every instrament and also came with paino accompaniment!!

How to Get Started With the Clarinet ASIN:0934687099 Our Price: $5.95
Customer's Rating: 1 Summary: NOT a Good Start Comments: Frank Leanza's "How to Get Started With the Clarinet" is, in fact, precisely NOT what the title suggests. No fingering chart(!), shabby, garage-publishing-style photographs, few exercises, fewer instances of worthwhile advice for the beginner, and still FEWER points of interest for anyone who isn't quite literally just getting started with the clarinet. Not a good choice. I recommend instead Bruce Pearson's Comprehensive Band Method series, "Best in Class."
