How to DJ Right: The Art and Science of Playing Records
ASIN:0802139957
Our Price: $10.50

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: This book rocks!
Comments: I just recently started taking DJ classes, and this book has been tremendous help. Historically, the barriers to entry have been a bit high in the DJ field, often leaving beginners like myself wondering where to start: what equipment do I need? what are the fundamentals I have to work on? The book fills this gap, providing a comprehensive guide on equipment, techniques, online resources and the general nature of the industry in a very clear format. I've browsed through other books on this subject (a rather limited selection) and none of them come close in terms of breadth and quality.

The book hits on a lot of key points and has an encouraging tone, balanced out by a bit of sarcastic humor. For instance, it notes the likely frustrations from trying a new technique (yes, everyone stinks in the beginning), but this just requires practice, practice, practice. The book has also been right on the mark about how most people in the field, from experienced DJs to record store operators, are quite helpful. Even when I pass the beginner stage, it will surely be a useful reference well into the future.

Our Price: $17.59

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Lots of advice
Comments: I got this book when I didn't know anything about DJing. I read every page of the book, and it was fantastic! It was just filled with tips and advice for anyone who wanted to get into DJing. For example, it says some of the equipment you'd need to buy to be a mobile, different games you can play at weddings and bar/bat mitzvahs, how to get the crowd moving, and much more.

Comments: Local DJ captures THE defining era of rock&roll history--the 1950s through the 1990s.. Reading the book is like spending a few hours at an old Irish bar, listening to great stories that are more intriguing than fiction because they are REAL. It's a great trip down memory lane, or a way to vicariously live the life you WISH you'd lived.

Summary: Great reference
Comments: I disagree with the other previous review. This book does a great job of covering the wealth of radio air personalities from the 1920's to the 1990's. More well known broadcasters get more in-depth analysis. Overall, this is a wonderful reference work and a must have for any serious radio history enthusiast.

Summary: Don't waste your money on this overpriced book
Comments: You gotta be kidding? Author ran a little stand alone AM station, and guided another stand alone FM into a forced sale due to poor ratings and sales. $35 for this? And, why does the author work for the Wisconsin Lottery today, instead of broadcasting?

Careers As a Disc Jockey (Career Resource Library)

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: No Sugarcoating With this Book
Comments: "It must be sooo much fuuuun to be a DJ!" Being in radio, lines like this are common themes that I hear from non-radio people. And radio IS fun, except for the crummy pay, behind-the-scenes office politics (aka "screwjobs"...losing promotions for simply not kissing enough backside, etc.), and lousy hours. Radio is not as glamorous as it seems from the outside, and Chris Weigant puts it all out there for you in his book, "Careers as a Disc Jockey". He warns the reader about all the stressful aspects of radio I have listed as well as the benefits, like the "efficiency" of modern-day radio automation. If you're thinking of getting into radio, read this before you make your decision. It is a business you need to be prepared for.

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Have Mercy Baby, He's Howling in Rock-N-Roll Heaven
Comments: Wolfman Jack "was" the ultimate D.J of all time. No one will ever fill his shoes. This book defines how his career got started, but it's too bad it wasn't accompanied by an "audio". You can't learn about or know "Wolfman" unless you've heard one of his shows. I was stunned that the entertainment world never gave him a tribute! But he "did"it in the way he lived his life! HAVE MERCY WOLFMAN. (insert a HOWL here!)
FM : The Rise and Fall of Rock Radio
ASIN:0679462953
Our Price: $24.95

Customer's Rating: 3
Summary: For Lovers of FM Radio
Comments: Neer's book covers his lifetime in radio - 40 years or so. A good 1/3 of the book deals with FM radio outside the NYC area. Another sizeable hunk covers Neer's college and pre-WNEW FM days. I skimmed about 40% of the book.

The rest was great. Neer tells wonderful stories of Bruce Springsteen calling in to the station in the middle of the night; Chrissie Hynde showing up for a studio interview bombed; etc. It's not a tell-all exactly. Neer describes format and management changes at WNEW which are fascinating. If you grew up in the NYC area and loved Scottso and the Nightbird BUY THIS BOOK. If this isn't your gig... pass.

The Mobile DJ Handbook
ASIN:0240802667
Our Price: $18.87

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Just the ticket
Comments: As a former On-Air/Radio DJ, I had longed to join the ranks of the Mobile Entertainer. Try as a I might, I couldn't seem to find enough information on how to break-in. Sure there are plenty of resources for buying equipment, but that left so much unmentioned. THIS BOOK HAS IT COVERED! Ms. Zemon did a great job breaking down the do's and don't, the in's and out's and everything in between. I thank her for the book and you'll thank me for recommending it. It's a great resource!
Superjock: The Loud, Frantic, Nonstop World of a Rock Radio Dj
ASIN:0809283026
Our Price: $6.95

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: The road to success
Comments: Superjock is an excellent biography of how Larry Lujack climbed the rungs, known as markets and got to pinnacle of his career in the Windy City. There is a lot of what went on then, that goes on today. The book was written when radio was more about the talent then about the business. While Lujack does drop a few names from radio stars of that era i.e. Charlie Tuna, Mac Richmond, Jerry Kaye, Pat O'Day, Tom Murphy, etc. What is missing is how Lujack networked to get where he did. But, then again, the book is about Lujack's career path, not about those of his radio bretheran.
A MUST READ for anyone in the business then...and now.
Don Sherwood : The Life and Times of The World's Greatest Disc Jockey
ASIN:1559580011
Our Price: $19.95

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: DON SHERWOOD and SAN FRANCISCO were synonymous! He was It!
Comments: San Francisco in the '50's was a Sherwood-kind-of-place to be, as Herb Caen might have noted in his Bagdad-by-the-Bay San Francisco Chronicle daily column. KSFO was the City's most popular radio station, and Don Sherwood (nee Danny Cohalen) was the station's #1 gift to the entire San Francisco Bay Area. In the vernacular of today, "Sherwood Ruled!". He was radio's ORIGINAL "Shock Jock", the 50's version of Howard Stern, and more than any station manager could ever deal with or contain. What he did with/to/for the medium of radio could only be experienced if you ever heard the man at play. In commuter-bumper-to-bumper traffic, he'd tell you to roll down your windows and turn up your car radio, then he'd play a siren at full-volumn and scare the oil out of the car in front of you! Here was a Man for All Seasons! Sherwood lived as he died, comedically, on a houseboat, away from the airwaves, alternating puffs off a cigarette with breaths from an oxygen tank, a sad & sorry victim of Emphysema. But lived he did, and when at last his epitaph was etched so valiantly as in these pages, authoress Harper paid High Tribute to He who indeed earned and evoked and bore so deservedly, the Mantle of "The World's Greatest Disc Jockey", Bagdad-by-the-Bay's very own, First in the Field of One, "Out of the Mud grows the Lotus", DON SHERWOOD! Find a copy and read it again and again; Sherwood will come to life for YOU, and YOU will love Don as the rest of us did back in those Halcyon Days of RADIO!

Summary: Best book on early RnR radio
Comments: I am a deejay (and librarian) myself and this book is the best on the subject I've ever found, a real pleasure to read and full of hilarious stories. The sections on the great DJ's at WLAC - Hoss Allen, Gene Nobles & John R - make it a true gem. Some of it is sloppy, true (see the sour schoolmarm review) but let's face it, the subject matter is sloppy, too. This is not a dry, academic treatise, folks - it's about ROCK AND ROLL and the spirit of these guys shines through in these pages like nowhwere else! This is a spirit that has all but been snuffed out by the likes of Clear Channel and Top 40; if you want to see who was integrating the races before the Civil Rights movement you can read all about them in this book. In the 1950's being a Southern White Liberal was a dangerous thing; to promote Rock and Roll was almost suicidal. Although they were all players in payola (which as Alan Freed observed is called lobbying in DC) they were real heroes to a lot of folks, including myself. I love this book.
How To Avoid DJ Horror Stories: The Standard Reference Guide For Brides, Party Planners And Anyone Else In The Market For A Mobile Disc Jockey
ASIN:0966817206
Our Price: $10.95

Customer's Rating: 3
Summary: Substituting opinion for fact
Comments: Mr. Harrison is probably a good mobile dj but he makes the mistake of assuming regional preferences (such as clients not wanting lighting) and that most weddings go 4 hours is true all over. More importantly, there are numerous occasions where he states his opinion as fact. If these were truly facts, there would be documentation to back them up. There is a lot of good advice in this book but it's mixed in with a lot of opinions and outdated information which the target audience would like have difficulty sifting through.
