Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Orff Instrument Source Book, volume 1 Comments: Elizabeth Nichols' book of thirty-six traditional folk and ethnic songs for children is an excellent source for singing, playing Orff instruments, games and short scenes for drama and movement. There is a wealth of ideas for teaching and for student participation within the Orff Schulwerk process. This process is an approach to music and movement education in an elemental style that opens the way to all kinds of music (from Werner Thomas's Introduction to Elementaria by Gunild Keetman). Developed by Carl Orff, Gunild Keetman, and others in Germany, the schulwerk gives students the opportunity to compose, improvise, invent, arrange, notate and perform music. Through such joyful activities as singing, using sound gestures, dancing, playing percussion and simple melody/harmony instruments, children learn music and movement. The preface of Ms. Nicholas' Source Book contains articles on "Improvisation: the Key to Orff Schulwerk," along with suggestions for "Drama, Movement and Recorder" each citing specific songs contained within the collection. Those teachers not familiar with using Orff instruments will find clear, concise descriptions and directions under "Melodic Instruments, Nonpitched Percussion Instruments, Mallet Techniques and Scoring and Terms." The music and poems that follow are presented in a visual layout that is easy to read and understand. Notes to the teacher provide for additional layers of student participation and creativity. Unique to the scores of each song are the designation of pitch preparation by a specific instrument and note stems printed in opposite directions for left and right hand preparation and performance. The Source Book is arranged in a sequential progression from simple to complex and contains helpful guides for successful teaching. The material has strong student appeal and offers a means for musically challenging children of elementary school ages. It is fortunate that Elizabeth Nichols, a founding member of The American Orff Schulwerk Association, has chosen to share her wealth of experience in this back-to-the a basics Orff resource. For additional enrichment materials, the Orff Instrument Source Book, Volume 2 is available for the more advanced. Older students, through middle school, will benefit from Tune into Limericks with Orff Instruments, based on the poems of Edward Lear.
