Art of Saxophone Playing ASIN:0874870577 Our Price: $13.56
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Besides the pink cover, it's incredible Comments: If you play the saxophone, you must have this book. Especially if you are a begginer, and you don't have a teacher, this book can explain just about everything you need to know. This book focuses really on the art of playing. You feel like you are reading a conservatory book as you read. Along with this and some practice, you could be playing pro in months! Even if you are like me, playing for years, this book has value. Although sometimes a little begginer talk is included, the book goes in depth on reeds, embouchure, vibrato, fingerings, trills, tounging, solos, volume, etc. The altissimo section shows you fingerings to F, the F an octave above the normal range! And while for a begginer, this range is impossible, it shows that this book will last you a LONG time. Explains how to fix every reed problem you could have, talks all about mouthpieces, and materials. 111 pages of material. You WILL learn something from this book, there is no reason not to purchase it. Learn from the master, Larry Teal, and learn the art of the saxophone.

Universal Method for Saxophone ASIN:082580146X Our Price: $26.95
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: Copyright 1908 Comments: As a beginner, I found the dive straight into scale exercises a bit difficult. I found the text entirely too brief. I would have appreciated a finger chart that is not 100 years old, and repeatedly recopied to the point that I could not figure out what part of the Sax was indicated in the Figure. Maybe I will use the book in a couple of years after I learn the parts of my Sax.

The Complete Saxophone Player Book 1 ASIN:0711908877 Our Price: $11.66
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Start here Comments: After reading this first book one discovers that Mr. Ravenscroft is not only a superb sax player -just listen to Pink Floyd's The Final Cut to take a sample- but a remarkable teacher also. The book itself starts with the obvious very basics you need to knowing the instrument. Then step by step introduces posture, breathing, embouchure and fingering techniques. And for those unpacients, the first sound comes just befor mid-book. From there on simple tunes are presented in an easy way, so anyone can play his first ¨solo gigs¨ in a matter of days.

Blues Saxophone : An In-Depth Look at the Styles of the Masters ASIN:0634026208 Our Price: $17.95
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Good but not IN DEPTH Comments: I love the blues, and as a saxophone player I was happy to get this book. What the book has is transcriptios of about 15 solos in styles ranging from the roughest Chicago blues to Sonny Rollins sophisticated chord changes. There is a CD where the author plays those solos accompanied by his band. before every solo there is one page, half of which is a short history of the stylist whose solo is transcribed, and half which is a theoretical reference. The solos are good to learn, and may provide a good exercise for playing blues. But the theoretical explanation is lacking and is certainly not IN DEPTH. I do recommand the book as it has some good blues ideas, and shows respect for some of the underrated blues stylists.

Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: A must have for Begginers to Professional Saxophonists alike Comments: I have been using this book for some time now, and it has helped me time and time again. In a junior highschool jazz band this book is ver helpful. It has some of the most peragotive tenor sax solos i have ever seen. And if your ever in a jam where u need a solo right away and just cant think of one, this book is a life saver. The cd that comes with it is also very helpful. If u dont know the rythm or not a good sight reader the cd will get you one your way. Just play the cd and Play along. In about an hour to a solo, you are set for a surprise performance. A definite must have for all.

The Music of John Coltrane: Over 100 Compositions by Jazz Saxophone Great John Coltrane (Jazz Great) ASIN:0793504090 Our Price: $16.07
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: Solos? Comments: While this book does contain many of the great songs Coltrane played, if you're looking to play along with the man himself, you should look elsewhere. There's a book with his solos entitled "John Coltrane Solos" part of the Artist Transcriptions, published by Hal Leonard and transcribed by Carl Coan. I highly suggest this, for it also covers the heads of the tunes he played. If you're looking for the omnibook of the tenor (Coltrane) this is the book to go for. The series also has books of Stan Getz and others.

Masters of Jazz Saxophone : The Story of the Players and Their Music ASIN:087930622X Our Price: $27.97
Customer's Rating: 2 Summary: serious omissions. Comments: Tony Coe,s picture is on the cover yet there is nothing inside about this ex Clarke-Boland sideman who was the first non American to win the Jazzpar("Jazz Nobel") prize and played the tenor sax solo on most of the Pink Panther films plus plus. Also missing is British Nigel Hitchcock who can blow anyone away. Although an acceptable coffee table book, it is defective for the above omissions plus. Perhaps it,s all down to the well known British cronyism!

How To Play Saxophone ASIN:0312104774 Our Price: $9.95
Customer's Rating: 1 Summary: Needs organization Comments: I picked up this book, and I am very dissappointed. It doesn't have much organization nor aim for what level it wants to teach. Some of the stuff is very easy; other parts are difficult. But it's not presented in any kind of order, so first-timers will get very intimidated, while experienced players will get next to nothing, provided they have the patience to mine for the information. A detailed table of contents and subject breaks would have helped tremendously.

|
Tipbook - Saxophone : The Best Guide to Your Instrument ASIN:9076192332 Our Price: $9.95
Customer's Rating: 2 Summary: Needs proof-reading Comments: What should be an excellent beginners book has a few too many substantive errors to really get top recommendation:Page 40 - "Low A Baritones are still Bb Instruments!" They are Eb horns!! Page 55 - "HP Instruments are about an inch shorter than saxes with standard tuning; low pitched instruments are about an inch taller." - The length is proportional to saxophone's size, and there is only "HP & LP", not "HP, Standard and LP". Page 112 (Mouthpiece Manufacture) - "The final steps include corking and stamping." Saxophone Mouthpieces are not corked. There are others, and errors in the website's corresponding Tips. An experienced player would gloss right over these woopsies, but they deserve the editor's review and correction a second edition. This series is done in several languages, and at revision perhaps the translation could be polished. This book would still be a nice gift book for a young student, but not really a substitute for the "must own" saxophone works a student will really need.

The Cambridge Companion to the Saxophone ASIN:0521596661 Our Price: $21.32
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: History Lesson? Comments: When I bought this book I thought it would be more of a general reference book. However, it is more essays on the history of the saxophone and the more technical aspects of playing. Recomended for teachers more than students.

Outstanding Jazz Saxophone Solos For "Eb" (alto sax) ASIN:1882146670 Our Price: $19.95
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Awesome Jazz Solos for Kids who Loooove Jazz Comments: When I got this book, I was expecting to trash it in the first month after using it, like I do with a lot of my saxophone books that become a bore. However, that was not what happened. When I started playing these totally cool solos I just couldn't stop. I mean, they were actually really fun to play. Several months have passed, but I still havent dumped out this book that really made my day when I first bought it. All my friends love this book too(they play the sax like I do), and its becoming quite popular with all of us. Yep... This is a really, really great book. I recommend it to all the other kids that don't have anything good to play.

Best Of The Beatles - Alto Saxophone ASIN:0793521440 Our Price: $9.95
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: Lots of songs! A few problems though... Comments: First of all, except for "Birthday" a maybe a few others, the parts for alto sax are all the vocal leads in songs, ONLY. The songs are fairly easy to play, and aren't written exactly the way it is played on the cds (some different repeats or note lengths, or in some songs like "Sgt. Pepper" you get harmonies instead of the melody.) One of my biggest problems is that many of the songs (all?) are not in the same key as the real ones. Playing along with the cd unfortunately is impossible unless you transpose the music to a different key. However, this book is cheap and comes with many, many songs! ***In addition to this, there is a very good Beatles song book called Lennon & McCartney solos for the alto sax. The parts are well written and have a wider difficulty range than this one. It comes with a play-along cd which will supply the rythym section for you and will play your part on a piano (which you can turn off.) It only has about 10 songs (Yesterday, Can't Buy Me Love, Lady Madonna {my fav song to play and the hardest piece you'll find in either book}, and Maxwell's Silver Hammer to name a few,) but is well worth it.

Customer's Rating: 1 Summary: Lacking in substance Comments: There's not much to this book besides dated photos of people with '80s big hair and a few introductory paragraphs about getting acquainted with the saxophone. More to the point, there's little to the contents that makes its focus anymore "contemporary" than any other Volume 1 saxophone book. And there are plenty of better books like that out there. I wish I'd passed this one by.

Essential Elements 2000: B Flat Tenor Saxophone: Comprehensive Band Method ASIN:0634003186 Our Price: $6.95
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Great for Beginners Comments: The "Essential Elements 2000: A Comprehensive Band Method" is a great book for a young person who is learning an instrument for the first time. There is a fingering chart in the back of the book to make looking up fingerings quick and easy. The book starts off very basic with the parts of the instrument. The easiest notes to play and finger are presented first with exercises to practice them. This book comes with a play-along CD. This CD includes all solo exercises.Hal Leonard also offers (though not through Amazon) band sets for band directors. They are simple arrangements of music that correlate with the book. They are great for the first concert. There is an older version of this book called "Essential Elements: A Comprehensive Band Method". The book is purple and has many of the same features as this one, but the CDs have to purchased separately.
