The ABCs of Violin for the Absolute Beginner: Bk1
ASIN:0966373103
Our Price: $8.95

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Excellent book, by an excellent instructor
Comments: At age 43, my friends thought I was nuts to want to learn to play the violin... but this book made it seem simple. Now that I've finished it, I can play all the songs in the book and I can even figure out other songs on my own. I can hardly wait to get my hands on Book 2!

Suzuki Violin School (Suzuki Violin School Cd): Vol. 1
ASIN:0874874858
Our Price: $15.95

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Suzuki CD a must for students
Comments: The Suzuki philosophy is based upon the idea that children can learn music in the same manner they do their native language, through repetitive listening. This listening is then followed up with 1) Individual Instruction with a trained Suzuki teacher 2) Group lessons on a bi-weekly / weekly basis 3) Parent Involvement 4) Encouragement. Students begin lessons as early as two years old and through repetition of small and enjoyable steps begin building a music vocabulary. This high quality CD gives a foundation for pitch memory and a framework of music language from which a well trained teacher can build upon. There is also a version of this CD which is performed by David Nadien; the benefit is there are also recordings of the piano accompaniments without the violin so that students can practice with the piano. Both the Suzuki and Nadien versions of the Suzuki Violin School recordings are fabulous. My only wish is that the final two volumes, 9 and 10, were also on recordings.
First Lessons Violin Book/CD Set
ASIN:0786618051
Our Price: $7.95

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: First lessons, it shows you how!
Comments: I'm 36 and recieved a Violin for my 5th wedding anniversary. (5th = wood traditionaly) I've wanted to play for a long long time, however I know nothing about music. Before this book, I had absolute ZERO music knowledge. This book showed the finger positions before each lesson. This was key for me, because when I was reading through "Step one: Teach yourself Violin", which I got at the same time and looked into first, I didn't understand how you can make a B note on G, D, A, & E strings. It just didn't click. This book has a diagram showing for example on the E string it's Open string = E, then first finger position = F#, then G# and then A. Each lesson is laid out with a note diagram of the strings involved and which position on the fingerboard makes which note. This is what got me started, as I said I was somewhat lost with the other book. There is not much on holding the violin or bow, but enough to get started. It also has a brief description on music notation. Through the progression of lessons the music is a bit more complicated in that new things like dynamics are introduced. for $... this is a must if you are like me and starting from scratch. I also like "Step one: Teach yourself Violin", because it has a video cassette, but I suggest First Lessons first!

The Art of Violin Making
ASIN:0709058764
Our Price: $91.00

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Good Investment
Comments: This is not a type of beautifully decorated book usually found on coffee table to amuse guests even though it is of superb quality. It belongs in the workshop. It is written for both inspired and motivated beginners as well as serious luthiers. The chapter on tuning plates is revealing but can confuse a beginner. Since I am a beginner myself, I wished for complete measurements of the violin. I overcame the shortcomings by contacting a supplier of woods, tools and plans. Rest assured, the author included the list of suppliers at the end of the book.
Violin Primer
ASIN:1893907341
Our Price: $14.95

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: Quite Good
Comments: I've just started taking violin lessons and bought this (plus a couple of other) books/primers. This one is quite good. The instruction is clear for the most part (learning how to hold the violin and the bow and how to begin is quite difficult and I can't imagine doing that from just a book like this - I started taking private lessons 1 time a week and this book has been a good supplement). Of particular use to me was the tuning guide showing which piano keys to use to tune the violin's four strings....other primers similar to this one have been nowhere near as clear in some of the basics.

Summary: ENCHANTING
Comments: I first came across this book in one of my university classes (Music for the Child)and fell in love with it immediately. It is now is my son's (age 2 1/2) favorite book. Even my husband loves it. We can all recite it by heart. It's a great way to introduce musical instruments to young children. My son recently saw a harp in person for the first time and recognized it right away because of this story. The prose, the illustrations - all are wonderful!!! A must for any child's library!

Suzuki Violin School: Violin Part, vol. 1
ASIN:0874871441
Our Price: $6.95

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: The one, the only and still the greatest
Comments: To the parents of children undertaking the violin, be advised. The detractors that have reservations about the Suzuki method/book are missing two basic facts a) your child will learn how to play the violin (beautifully with some effort), and b) that this is really the only method that directly addresses the daunting task of teaching a string instrument to a child with pre-reading or early reading skills. Like it or not, agree with it or not, this is the method that your teacher will more probably than not adopt. It really does work; I have seen a string orchestra, taught by Suzuki, performing the Bach Concerto for 2 Violins in which none of the performers was over 12. Lest you read other reviews and be tempted to pass on Suzuki for some more "conventional" method, give this book and a good teacher a try, and be amazed at the skills that your child displays.
Violin Making: A Guide for the Amateur
ASIN:1565230914
Our Price: $14.95

Customer's Rating: 2
Summary: Depends on your goals
Comments: This book is directed, not to the amateur violin-builder who admires and aspires to emulate the fine craft of violin-making on a modest scale, but rather to the 'amateur' in the sense of someone who is less interested in immersing themselves in the craft and more interested in building a fiddle at all, somehow.

If you are the type of person who is affected by concern about how to do something 'right' (i.e. following some variant of traditional or professional practice) than this is the wrong book for you and you should invest in Johnson/Courtnall if you can at all afford to (really, never was money better-spent), otherwise Strobel and/or Buchanan are better choices.

On the other hand, if you just want to get a fiddle built with as little fuss as possible, and without minding taking some shortcuts here and there, then this little book will certainly encourage you on that journey. The approach in this book requires fewer tools and less acquisition of new skills, and goes out of its way to ensure the reader is not daunted by any high-fallutin' ideas of high craft, just go to it and get it done.

Teach Yourself Violin (Step One)
ASIN:0825618827
Our Price: $15.96

Customer's Rating: 2
Summary: Definitely not for beginners!!
Comments: I just recently took up the violin and bought this thinking it would give me a jump start before I started lessons. I was wrong. First of all, the teacher on the accompanying instructional video has zero personality, something that I find very unmotivating. Also, there is not much in the way of demonstration. She will tell you, for instance, to play the G scale, then she will proceed to play through the entire scale without actually showing you what to do. There is no way anybody could learn to play on their own using this method. At the very best, this is a music book - that's all. My advice is to save your money and spend it instead on a real violin lesson.

Comments: this is a MUST for any violinist who is serious about playing the violin. This book has solution to all of the problems that a violinist faces, in addition, this is a great leaning tool, lines from major concertos are used as exemples. again, this book is a must for anyone who's serious about playing the violin or even becoming a concert soloist.
Great Masters of the Violin
ASIN:0671225987
Our Price: $24.00

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Essential reading for any violin lover!
Comments: Comprehensive book that covers every major virtuoso from Corelli to Zukerman by a knowlegeable Russian violin scholar who lived when the great russian music was being composed.

This is the most complete book about violinists I have ever read. This is the book that will "fill in the gaps" of any missing knowledge you may have concerning the great violin soloists of the past.

(This is the hardcover edition)

I'll say it again, this is essential reading for any violin lover!!!

The Violin Explained: Components, Mechanism, and Sound
ASIN:0198167393
Our Price: $27.50

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: A must read for every violinist and luthier!
Comments: This book contains the most important physical aspects of how a violin works, in a format you wont need a Ph.D. to understand. While "The Physics of the Violin" is a more complete reference, this manuscript does a better job of putting the physical principles in the contexts of musicians and luthiers. I recommend it to every violinist, especially those who like to tinker with their instrument!
Complete Violin Sonatas and Trio Sonatas
ASIN:0486272419
Our Price: $15.37

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: the orpheus of the violin
Comments: extremely good edition of these classic works. the violin sonatas include not only the straightforward version of the first print (Jan 1, 1700) but the elaborate ornaments included in later publications "as Corelli plays them" -- a fascinating light on what people actually did with this music. every violinist should play these -- contemporaries called them "the very staff of life."
An Encyclopedia of the Violin (Da Capo Press Paperback)
ASIN:0306800047
Our Price: $15.40

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: An unique window into a bygone era
Comments: Perhaps one of the broadest accounts of the violin ever written, An Encyclopedia of the Violin is a well-written, fascinating, and at times nostalgic account of violinmakers, performers, violin literature, and more. This is truly an epic and groundbreaking book that covers more information than one would expect from a volume several times larger. Published in 1925, it contains rare photographs of distinguished violins and bows, as well as well as vivid descriptions of intricate details of these instruments, as well as a guide on how make them! Another section is devoted to violin technique, including advice on how to play difficult passages from the violin literature. In addition, there is also a massive dictionary of violinists, containing the author's often insightful analysis into the style of the performers, and also includes their biographical information. An Encyclopedia of the Violin is so all encompassing that it could easily be split up into several fine books-Great European Violins and Their Makers, Guide to Violin and Bow Making, The Art of Violin Playing and Teaching, and Violin Performance from 1800-1925 are just a few of the hypothetical titles that the reader can create exclusively using the material in this unique and monumental book. To top it off, the introduction was written by the famous Belgian violinist Eugene Ysaye, one of the greatest players of all time, and the author's idol as a performer. While some of the material and ideas in An Encyclopedia of the Violin may seem dated to the modern reader, there is much that is timeless and invaluable and will appeal to professional violinists or anybody else that appreciates the sound and beauty of the violin.

Art of Violin Playing: Book One
ASIN:0825828228
Our Price: $29.95

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: Great book
Comments: I limited myself to 4 stars because I'm not an expert on violin materials, but I loved this book. When I found this book I was looking for a well written, comprehensive book that covers all of the basic aspects of violin playing. This book does a wonderful job of it. A lot of nuanced aspects of playing are addressed and explained very well.

I hope there are more, possibly better books out there (as this book cannot cover everything there is to learn), but this is the best I've found so far.
